Tea-Time Talk: Staging Violence Against Women and Girls #16Days

CREW GAL Creative House, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, NE29 6TG
Thursday 26th November 2026 5:00PM
As part of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, join Workie Ticket Theatre at Crew Gals Creative House for a brew, a slice of cake and an honest conversation about how we use theatre and creativity to challenge violence against women and girls. We’ll share a special reading of 'I Walk the Line', written by JoJo Kirtley and based on her lived experience of coercive control and domestic abuse, read by Workie Ticket Co-Artistic Director Ashlea Sanderson.

The reading will lead into a conversation about JoJo’s Churchill Fellowship and her Staging Violence Against Women and Girls report. With support from the Churchill Fellowship, we’re sharing what we’ve learned from theatre-makers and survivor-led projects, exploring how creative practice can amplify survivor voices, challenge inequality and help build a world free from violence. We’ll also talk about Theatre of the Survivor: The Podcast, our plans for Series Two, and the big question: what next? How do we turn learning into action and keep pushing for change?

And... because Workie Ticket Theatre is celebrating NINE YEARS of making theatre, telling stories and being proper little Workie Tickets, there’ll be birthday cake! Come after work, grab a brew and join us. Whether you’re an artist, work with survivors, are part of a community organisation, you're all welcome. Event is FREE, donations welcome.

Content note / Trigger warning: This event includes discussion of domestic violence, coercive control, post separation abuse and violence against women and girls, which some people may find upsetting. Please take care of yourself and step out at any time if you need to.
Age guidance: Recommended for ages 14+. The event includes mature themes and references to abuse.

🧡 A little side note about 16 Days of Activism - 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence runs from 25 November to 10 December. This year’s UNiTE theme calls on us to ensure justice, protect survivors and end impunity. Violence against women and girls is not inevitable, and it is not something we should accept as part of everyday life. It happens in homes, relationships, workplaces, communities and online. It affects women and girls across all backgrounds, and ending it requires more than words. It requires action, accountability and change.
At Workie Ticket Theatre, we believe theatre and creativity have a role to play. They can challenge harmful attitudes, make space for voices too often unheard, expose injustice and help us imagine a different future. That’s why we’re bringing people together to share stories, reflect on what needs to change and ask a simple but important question: what next? Because women and girls deserve to live free from violence, abuse and fear. Everywhere. Always. 🧡
