Jonathan Bate - The Garden: Our 4000 Year Quest for Paradise
Sanctuary Room, Brimscombe Mill, Stroud, GL5 2QN
Thursday 12th November 2026
The Garden is where humanity has worked out its relationship with the natural world. The place where spirituality and nature converge.
Sir Jonathan Bate was formerly Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford and Provost of Worcester College, Oxford, and is currently Professor of Literature at Arizona State University. He is one of the highly recognised Shakeaspearian scholars of our age.
In the UK, more than 27 million of us tend a window box, rooftop, or patch of earth – and find solace, sustenance and equilibrium. Jonathan Bate introduces his major new history, The Garden, which explores not only actual gardens, from palace estates to city allotments, but the meaning of gardens.
Drawing on poetry, painting, philosophy and religion, from Ovid to Shakespeare, Jane Austen and Emily Dickinson, this will be an event to both console and inspire.
Green fingers not required.
