This year, the Wombourne and District Choral Society is to stage their first Christmas Concert featuring St Nicolas Cantata by Benjamin Britten, to be performed together with children from local schools at St Michael and All Angels Church in Tettenhall, Wolverhampton on Sunday 6th December 2026 at 7.00pm, followed by a second traditional concert of Christmas music and carols at Beckminster Methodist Church, Birches Barn Road, Wolverhampton on Saturday 19th December 2026 at 7.00 pm.Saint Nicolas, Op. 42, is a cantata with music by Benjamin Britten on a text by Eric Crozier, completed in 1948. It covers the legendary life of Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, Lycia, in a dramatic sequence of events. It is scored for mixed choir, tenor soloist, four boy singers, strings, piano duet, organ and percussion. The only professionals required are the tenor soloist, a quintet of string players to lead the other strings, and the first percussionist. The premiere was the opening concert of the first Aldeburgh Festival in June 1948, with Peter Pears as the soloist. Intended primarily for performance by amateur musicians: it is now frequently performed by youth and amateur ensembles.
Tickets for the concert are £15 each, with children under 16 free and can be bought from choir members, online at the choir’s website www.wombournechoralsociety.org.uk, or by buying at the door on the night. Wombourne & District Choral Society is a well-established, mixed choir of some 50 singers, drawn from the local area and have a varied repertoire, mainly full classical works, often performed with soloists and an orchestra and will be celebrating 100 years of choral singing in 2029. New members are always welcome.
