In this State - Michelle Turberfield

A girl lives under the watchful eye of the state; constantly trying to be everything her nation wants her to be. She loves her country, but as the security cameras blink, and she starts to suffocate under the stifling expectations of being a perfect citizen - a ghost comes back to visit. Drawing on lived experiences, In this State is a contemporary one-woman play set in a fictitious Asian autocracy. Using live-feed surveillance footage, projection and poetic language, it seeks to reshape British views on authoritarianism and inspire greater appreciation for democracy by asking the question: What is freedom?
