Creative Health is about creating the conditions and opportunities for arts, creativity and culture to be embedded in our health services. Since the start of 2024 our project has been exploring how Creative Health can be embedded within the health system across South Yorkshire as part of the wider strategy for preventing ill-health and tacking health inequalities. Our ambition is for all residents to have access to sustainably funded Creative Health programmes in their community, wherever they live and whatever their background.

Why does this matter?
There is strong evidence to show that Creative Health can reduce pressure on health and social care services by preventing the onset of ill health and by supporting the management of long-term conditions, offering patients effective, non-clinical approaches that reduce reliance on healthcare services and result in cost savings, as well as improving wellbeing quality of life.

What to expect? Building on our first conference in 2025 which was attended by more than 80 people, this year’s conference promises to be bigger and better! The programme has been co-created with a fantastic team of Creative Health participants – people with lived experience of ill-health – to showcase the very best that Creative Health has to offer. Highlights will include:

  • Plenary sessions on the evidence behind why and how creative works, including the biological and neurological benefits, and the need to think differently about how we demonstrate the value of creative health.
  • Participatory and creative workshops including:
    • Story Circling as part of a Collaborative Method of Governance - How ‘story circling’ can be used to bring participants and professionals together to improve the creative health offer
    • Ownership and Stepping Up: Developing Agency - How drama can enable people to develop agency, confidence and peer leadership
    • Singing for Health - How singing can support those with COPD, Long Covid, anxiety and Parkinson's
    • Lighthouses and Safe Spaces Within Transactional and Relational Services - How to ensure people feel secure when accessing services
    • History Health Happiness: Read & Rewind - How shared reading with museum and art collections can foster calm, connection and creative wellbeing
    • What is Trauma Informed Practice in Creative Health? - How trauma-informed practice can support the setting up and running of Creative Health groups
  • Opportunities to connect with people from across the health system and creative organisations within and beyond South Yorkshire.
Who should attend? This year we’re really hoping to attract more participants from senior and strategic roles within the health and social care system. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t heard about creative health, are sceptical about the benefits or don’t currently engage with what is on offer. All that’s needed is an open heart, an enquiring mind, and a willingness to think differently about what health and social care services could and should be for the people of South Yorkshire.

This event is by invitation only. We kindly ask that you don’t forward this booking link. If you know someone who would benefit from attending, please get in touch with Amy Knowles at [email protected].
