WLGA training (formerly Data Cymru): A beginners guide to using Microsoft Excel

Aim
To introduce you to the basic principles of Microsoft Excel and provide some practical tools and tips to help you get the most out of it.
The course is intentionally ‘basic’ in its approach and content and is aimed at beginners. No previous knowledge of data, statistics or Microsoft Excel is required.

Content
Learning a new software program can feel daunting, no matter how familiar you are with the data. Microsoft Excel is one of the most popular and powerful data spreadsheet tools. Our training course is designed to help you at the beginning of your journey with Microsoft Excel, helping you build confidence about how to store, cleanse and manage your data, ready for analysis or presentation. You don’t need to be an analyst, a data expert or a tech wizard to harness the power of Excel.

Our training course offers practical advice and guidance to help you perform the most commonly used Microsoft Excel functions and formulas.

Outcomes
By the end of the course you will understand:
  • the uses and benefits of using Microsoft Excel
  • how Excel works, navigation in the program and necessary techniques
  • how to perform some of the most common functions and formulas in Excel
This training course is aimed at Welsh local authority colleagues, though anyone is welcome to attend. Please note: there is a maximum of two delegates per council. Please note, this course will be delivered in English only. If anyone is presenting in Welsh, or if at least 10% of those attending from outside the WLGA wish to use Welsh, simultaneous translation from Welsh to English will be made available. To allow us time to arrange this service, if you register to attend this training session after 24/2/2027, we may be unable to include any language preferences when considering whether simultaneous translation is required.
