Lauren Elkin in conversation with Alice Vincent

Veranda Books, London, W1H 5BA
Thursday 4th June 2026
We’re thrilled to welcome writer and translator Lauren Elkin to Veranda to celebrate the publication of her new book, Vocal Break. Described as a ‘full-throated tour of women’s voices’, from Edith Piaf to Billie Eilish, this book blends memoir, feminist manifesto and cultural history to examine the way power and identity shape our voices. Elkin writes with authority and passion and the result is “a whirlwind of a book and a testament to sonic sisterhood”.
Lauren Elkin is the critically acclaimed author of Art Monsters and Scaffolding, and a literary translator from French - she has translated the work of Constance Debré and Simone de Beauvoir, among others.
Lauren will be interviewed by Alice Vincent, whose 2025 book Hark is a permanent fixture on the Veranda Picks shelf. A startlingly original exploration of women’s relationship with sound, and how it changes as we move through life. From deep listening to phantom crying, this is one of the most intriguing and unique books we’ve read, and we’re delighted that Alice will be leading the conversation with Lauren - it promises to be a fascinating evening, and we’re delighted hope you can join us
Drinks from 6.30, conversation 7-8
