Gardens of Aranjuez - a concert

Our 2026–27 season opens with one of the best-loved works in all of music: Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez.

Inspired by the gardens of a royal Spanish palace, it's a piece full of sunshine and longing. If you've seen Brassed Off, you'll remember the famous "Concerto de Orange Juice" tune in the slow movement, played on flugelhorn in the film.

Around it sits a programme of contrasts: Doreen Carwithen's stormy seascape Bishop Rock, Lili Boulanger's radiant D'un Matin de Printemps, and César Franck's magnificent Symphony in D minor, which travels from darkness to a blazing, triumphant close.

We're delighted to welcome guitarist Richard Haslam as our guitar soloist. Derbyshire-born and trained at the Royal Northern College of Music under Craig Ogden, Richard has performed the concerto with orchestras across the region.

You don't need to know the music to be swept up in it. Come and join us.

To become a Friend of the orchestra, select the Friends ticket which is valid for 12 months and gives you two tickets to each of our three main concerts, a saving on full price tickets.
