One of the most enduring of 20th Century dramatic works, Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale, receives a performance led by the peerless actor Toby Jones, accompanied by award-winning ensemble Chamber Domaine.

Written during the deadly 1918 influenza pandemic, the 60-minute work is written for a distinctive assortment of instruments and inspired by popular music of the period, including tango and ragtime. The story, based on a Russian folk tale, describes how a soldier, on leave from the army, trades his old violin for a magic book that can tell the future and make him rich. He soon discovers, however, that he has made a deal with the devil and that money does not bring happiness.

Paired with this extraordinary work is another: Walton's Façade, composed when he was in his early 20s, brought him instant fame and notoriety.  A witty, jazz-influenced chamber work setting Edith Sitwell's abstract poems, the work parodies popular dances and music hall tunes, including references to "Rule Britannia," the "Sailor's Hornpipe," and "I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside".
