Forbidden Fruits - Calefax Reed Quintet
Temple Church, London, EC4Y 7BB
Tuesday 16th February 2027 7:30PM
Calefax Reed Quintet
Calefax is a close-knit ensemble of five reed players united by a shared passion. For thirty-five years they have been acclaimed in the Netherlands and abroad for their virtuosic playing, brilliant arrangements and innovative stage presentation. They are the inventors of a completely new genre: the reed quintet. They provide inspiration to young wind players from all over the world who follow in their footsteps. Calefax can be defined as a classical ensemble with a pop mentality.
Many people are familiar with the pain of being excluded because they are thought of as different, or as not fitting in with others’ norms, because of the way they think, sound or act. In Forbidden Fruits, Calefax performs music by composers who were silenced because of who they were, because of their origins, or what they dared to compose. Calefax guides you on a journey through these stories. They are moving stories, but also hopeful ones – because, despite everything, the composers’ music lived on. Forbidden Fruits is a tribute to composers who continued to create despite the odds.
The programme will include movements from Byrd's Mass for Five Voices, Prokofiev's Suite from Romeo and Juliet, Shostakovich's 24 Preludes Op.34 and works by Korngold, Florence Price and Erwin Schulhoff.
This performance is generously sponsored by Jenny & Stephen Kingsley.
