Peter Bradshaw, Guardian 5/5: Terrifically exhilarating and funny, as bracing as a large vodka and tonic before lunch: fast, literate and funny with a key plot progression elliptically and unsentimentally managed.
Kevin Maher, The Times 4/5: It’s a joy to see the 86-year-old fully immersed and devouring his meatiest leading screen role since Bill Condon’s Mr Holmes in 2015.
John Nugent, Empire Magazine 4/5: Another solidly gripping film from the ever-prolific Soderbergh, this is a terrific two-hander, with Coel and McKellen on fine, fierce form.
Larushka Ivan-Zadeh, Daily Mail 4/5: The Christophers can feel stagey at times, but there are enough playful rug-pulls to keep viewers engaged.
Clarisse Loughrey, Independent 4/5: I wonder how much Soderbergh connects to the material there. He’s a filmmaker who almost moves too fast to be known. But I’m certain there’s a piece of his soul in The Christophers, if you look hard enough.
