Grinton Church Tower Tour

St Andrew's Church, Grinton, Swaledale, DL11 6HL
Saturday 5th June 2027
Access to bell towers can be quite interesting and may involve physical challenge. Towers are often accessed by spiral stone staircases which can be narrow and uneven due to the wear of centuries of use or they may be accessed by ladders which come in varying degrees of steepness or by combinations of these.
The climbs are worth the effort to view the bells hanging in their frames and to understand the engineering design that allows these heavy bells to ring without damaging the structure of the tower.
The bells themselves may be engraved with a variety of inscriptions and most will have a record of their weight and when and where they were cast.
To understand how the bells move and the skills needed to ring the bells as part of a band, a visit to the tower will be enlightening. Two of our local towers are offering tours during the festival run by volunteers from the bands of ringers in each tower. Minimum numbers of visitors are necessary for the tours to take place and will last for around one hour.
