Krampus & Co : An A - Z of European Winter Folklore Monsters
Studio 1A, Bangor Co. Down BT20 4JP, BT20 4JP
Wednesday 23rd December 2026
GRUSS VOM KRAMPUS!
This December, step into the shadows with dark historian Andrew Johnston (Alternative Ulstours) for a chilling festive Terror Talk cataloguing the mythical entities from European winter folklore.
It’s jitters all the way as Andrew maps out a bestiary of creepy characters from England’s Apple Tree Man (A) to the Netherlands’ Zwarte Piet (Z), alongside figures like France’s Hans Trapp, Italy’s La Befana and, of course, the Alpine ‘anti-Santa’ himself – Krampus!
You will come face-to-face with the grotesque Grýla, Iceland’s ancient, child-devouring witch, and confront Wales’s spectral seasonal nightmare, the Mari Lwyd – a real-life horse skull paraded through the gloom. Uncover the deceptively fun veneer of Yuletide archetypes to expose their bloodcurdling roots. The presentation unmasks the sinister side of elves and aggressive Scandinavian trolls, delving into the
bizarre legends and cultural controversies of these traditions.
Have yourself a scary little Christmas with Alternative Ulstours!
Running time: 2 hours including interval
Age guidance: 12+
