This Is How We Do It – Free online sessions exploring different ways of working

Over the past couple of years, many people have asked us about the way we work. At the same time, we’re keen to learn from others who are tackling similar challenges. So, we’re opening up a space for conversation – a chance to share ideas, experiences, and approaches to contemporary arts, cultural events, and even social change, both here in Gloucester and beyond.

Next Up: THIS IS HOW WE DO IT: LET ARTISTS BE ARTISTS
Tuesday 10 November 2026 // 1pm – 2pm // Online (via zoom)

What if we paid artists to… just be artists?

For too long, there have been massive inequalities in terms of who benefits from ‘The Arts’ – both as audiences and professionals.
Artists go underpaid, under-heard and under-supported. And it’s not truly open to everyone.

Over the past 2.5 years, we’ve employed four artists as part of our team to ‘just be artists’, with no predetermined outcomes for their activity.
Let Artists Be Artists (LABA) is about rethinking how artists are supported. Without pressure or preconceived outcomes. Without all the hoop-jumping. In ways that make it clear that people’s value isn’t the same thing as their ‘productivity’.

It’s about allowing artists to get off the project treadmill for a bit, take their time, try things out and take risks.
For our next This Is How We Do It session, Strike A Light Artistic Director Emma Jane will be joined by three of the LABA artists – Jamaal O’Driscoll, Viv Gordon and Ed Patrick.

They’ll talk about:
  • What the LABA scheme is and how it came about
  • What the experience has been like for the artists and how it has impacted their work
  • What the challenges have been and what we’ve learnt
There’ll also be an opportunity to share your thoughts and ask any questions you might have.
