Sir Max Hastings - Plunder

Philip Lidbury Heath Memorial Talk

In the final weeks of the Second World War, the Western Front witnessed extraordinary scenes of heroism and horror. Some people distinguished themselves through courageous deeds, others through the basest crimes. From Montgomery’s daring crossing of the Rhine to the liberation of Bergen Belsen, the historian and former newspaper editor Max Hastings’s latest work blends tales of “big picture” events and the people – warlords, soldiers, prisoners, victims – who shaped and witnessed the last European act of history’s most terrible war.
