More Splendid than the Sun

The Bruegel Consort, a vocal ensemble specialising in sixteenth-century sacred polyphony, presents music celebrating the feast of Candlemas in the candlelit Old Church.   More Splendid Than the Sun highlights the joys and miracles of the Virgin Mary’s life.  Providing the centrepiece of this programme is a luminous six-voice Mass by Nicholas Ludford (c.1485-1557).   The Mass is based on the plainsong Videte miraculum (‘behold the miracle of the mother of the Lord’) for the feast day of Candlemas, the occasion when Mary presents Jesus in the temple forty days after his birth.

This concert is thematically linked to the earlier 5 pm recital.   A discounted bundle ticket for the two events is available.
