POSTPONED Drawing the Human & Painting Plants
Stobo Village Hall, Peebles, EH45 8NY
Friday 28th August 2026 10:00AM
The one who plants trees, knowing that he will never sit in their shade, has at least started to understand the meaning of life’.
Rabindranath Tagore
Our time together in Stobo, a place surrounded by the beauty of trees by the Tweed, will be divided in two.
The first exercise will be to draw together in a group circle. The human head is a challenge because we are so familiar with it. We will pick a small aspect and look through and around it. We will look at the book ‘Secret Knowledge ‘ written by the great late Hockney to guide us in ‘eyeballing’ to use his term. We will also look at Ana Maria Pacheco, Stanley Spencer.
The second half will concern composition and tone in plants or landscape. We will look at two artists who painted in the field: William Nicholson & Edvard Munch. We will see how they compose, rather than copy nature. Likewise our aim will be to capture a sense of rhythm to develop a voice of our own with ‘duende’ to use a word by the poet Lorca, his lecture explains its importance in art. We will look at drawings of María Sybilla Merian and contemporary botanical artists.
