Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927): 100th Anniversary Screening
Star & Shadow Cinema, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE2 1BB
Saturday 9th January 2027 7:30PM
The future turns 100.
Join us on the eve of Metropolis’s centenary for Fritz Lang’s spectacular vision of a city divided.
High above the streets, the wealthy live in luxury. Deep underground, workers toil at the machines that sustain their world. When the city ruler’s son discovers the conditions beneath his feet, his encounter with Maria draws him into a struggle over the city’s future.
Towering skyscrapers, vast machines, a sinister inventor and cinema’s most iconic robot: Metropolis helped invent the visual language of science fiction. A century later, its images still astonish, while its anxieties about inequality, technology and power remain painfully familiar.
Experience this landmark of silent cinema on the big screen, presented in its restored version with a recorded orchestral score and English subtitles.
