Stockport Symphony Orchestra - From the Scillies to Sibelius

Stockport Town Hall, Stockport, SK1 3XE
Saturday 7th November 2026 7:30PM
Carwithen Bishop Rock

Mozart  L' Amero
Strauss Songs: Amor, Morgen,Traum, Cäcilie, Befreit
Sibelius  Symphony No 1

Conductor - Philip Ellis

Soprano - April Fredrick

Doreen ('Mary') Carwithen, wrote for the concert stage but was also the first woman anywhere in the world to work full-time as a film composer, writing over 30 scores including one for the official coronation film for Queen Elizabeth II.  Bishop Rock is a splendid seascape and musical evocation of the eponymous lighthouse located a few miles from St Agnes Isle in the Scillies.

Anyone who attended our concert in January 2023 will still have fond memories of a truly breath-taking performance of Strauss' Four Last Songs by tonight's soloist and so expectations are high for the return of April Fredrick this evening with more Strauss to woo us.

Lastly, Sibelius 1, something one reviewer called “a work full of unrestrained strength, full of passionate vivacity and astonishing audacity.” Quite!

Stockport Symphony Orchestra acknowledges the kind support of the Alwyn Carwithen Trust in making tonight’s concert possible
