Southwold New Year's Day Concert 2027
St. Edmund's Church, Southwold, Suffolk, IP18 6JA
Friday 1st January 2027 3:00PM
The 2027 Southwold New Year’s Day concert will feature a performance of Schubert’s 'Trout' Quintet, directed by Southwold-based pianist and composer Nathan Williamson.
The concert will take place at 3pm on 1st January in St. Edmund’s Church, lasting approximately 1 hour.
The 'Trout' Quintet - for the rather unusual ensemble of violin, viola, cello, double bass, and piano - is one of the most joyful and distinctive works in the chamber music repertoire, written when the composer was just 22 years of age. From its graceful opening, to a boisterous and virtuosic finale, with sparkling variations on Schubert's own song 'The Trout', the music is full of sunshine, intimacy and infectious good humour - the perfect way to start the New Year!
Nathan has brought together an ensemble of distinguished colleagues for this performance - violinist Magnus Johnston, Concertmaster of the Royal Opera House, violist Jim O'Toole, cellist Jody Hughes, and bassist Andrew Durban. Many locals may remember that Magnus, his wife Marije and their children lived in Southwold during the Covid lockdown, when they contributed a huge amount to the local community through concerts on South Green and streaming music online into schools and care homes. The other musicians are all based in Suffolk and Norfolk, from where they lead distinguished freelance careers in both the local area with across the country with leading British orchestras and ensembles.
The Southwold New Year's Day concert has now become firmly embedded in the local calendar and demand is expected to be very high, so booking early is highly recommended.
