Skipton Musical Theatre Company
Skipton Musical Theatre Company (SMTC) has been entertaining local audiences for a century, with its roots dating back to 1925, when it was founded as the Skipton and District Amateur Operatics and Dramatic Society. The company’s first production — Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ — established a proud tradition of ambitious staging, strong ensemble performance, and community involvement.
Over the decades, the society has grown and developed, eventually becoming Skipton Musical Theatre Company, reflecting its continued commitment to high-quality musical theatre. Generations of performers, musicians, technical teams and volunteers have contributed their time and talent, building not only memorable productions but a lasting creative community.
SMTC has staged a wide range of productions over the years, from classic operetta and golden-age musicals to modern favourites. Recent successes include the sold-out 2023 production of ‘Calendar Girls’ and a sold-out run of ‘Oliver!’ in 2024, both of which delighted audiences and showcased the company’s depth of talent on and off stage. The company also proudly marked our centenary year in 2025 with a celebratory production of ‘Shrek The Musical’ — a landmark show in a landmark year that captured the spirit, humour and ambition that have defined the society for 100 years.
Most productions are staged at Skipton Town Hall, where SMTC continues to present large-scale musical theatre at the heart of the community. The company welcomes members of all experience levels and offers opportunities both on stage and behind the scenes within a supportive and friendly environment.
Alongside its productions, SMTC runs an annual programme of fundraising events throughout the year. These activities help support staging costs, technical equipment, costumes and future productions, while also bringing members and supporters together socially. From themed events and performances to community activities and special evenings, there are plenty of opportunities for people to get involved, show their support and help keep local musical theatre thriving.
Today, SMTC proudly honours its heritage while looking to the future — producing engaging musical theatre, nurturing talent, and keeping the curtain rising for many years to come.
