Edmund Gordon - The Invention of Angela Carter

Cafe D'Urberville, Sherborne, DT9 3BJ
Thursday 14th May 2026
Sherborne Literary Society is delighted to be hosting Edmund Gordon with his biography of Angela Carter.

Angela Carter was a radical and inspirational novelist, remembered for 'Nights at the Circus'; perhaps 'Heroes and Villains' or 'The Bloody Chamber' - certainly 'The Company of Wolves'? Her prose is exquisite and her ideas challenging. This biography has been highly acclaimed: 'A wonder . . . It creates a space in time, then and now, through which Carter emerges, living and breathing in all her wild and wise intelligence and originality.’ Ali Smith; and from Philip Hensher: ‘The best biography of the  year ... [It] will become a classic.’
Our speaker, her biographer Edmund Gordon is an award-winning writer and critic, and Reader in Creative and Critical Writing at King's College London. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. This promises to be an insightful talk into an extraordinary writer.
