John Hegley: Uses of Idiocy
The Samuel Worth Chapel, Sheffield, S11 8NT
Saturday 12th December 2026
Prepare to laugh, sing and be gloriously entertained as John Hegley returns to the Samuel Worth Chapel.
A return to the chapel with with some jolly festive folly.
They were all out at sea on a raft
he had not been involved in the craft
of the logs that were lashed
but when hopes all seemed dashed
they delighted in him being daft.
Idiocy comes in many forms.
Originally it meant
a person, insulated;
idiosyncratic.
An individual who went their way
disconnected from the rest.
A standpoint, thought
in ancient Greece
not to be the best
of social contributions.
But there are more modern meanings:
The weird way of the fool,
which can sometimes find solutions
in the workplace of the school,
wherein, a pupil may find such a tool, a burden.
(Verses sung and spoken, stories, drawings,
Myths, classrooms, discos, cardboard animals)
John Keats once sword-fenced with celery to enliven himself and his ladlady.
There will be other vegetable-based items in the show
possibly including cabbage-leaf-lurching, as illustrated
(Drawing by Isabella di Stefano)
Participation welcome, especially emotional participation.
Devised for adults, but not unsuitable for the odd nine-year-old.
