Big Butterfly Count - Stoke Park Bioblitz

The Vench - Lockleaze Youth and Play space and Community Centre, Bristol, BS7 9TB
Sunday 26th July 2026
BS7 is our next stop for a Citizen Science Sundays special at Stoke Park. Join us as we take part in the 2026 Big Butterfly count!

The idea behind Citizen Science Sundays is simple - Bristol is home to so many hotspots for nature, so we want to join forces with other like-minded locals and help to map the biodiversity found in our city, whilst taking time to appreciate the nature on our doorstep. Bristol also has a network of dedicated postcode-specific wildlife groups, each with its own iNaturalist project. Visiting a different postcode each time, we’ll be heading to a green space within that postcode and spending a few hours combing the area whilst taking note of what’s growing, flying and thriving there.

Recording our finds using cameras, phones and the iNaturalist app, we’ll be contributing useful data which is available to scientists and conservationists worldwide, helping them to build pictures of biodiversity at all levels. We’ll also be taking notes of the birds we spot, before submitting our records to the Bristol Regional Environmental Records Centre.

For this event, we will also be taking time to record butterflies and moths on the site as part of Big Butterfly Count - if you are coming along, take a look at the Butterfly Conservation site (click here) and be sure to download the Big Butterfly Count app in advance!

Everyone is encouraged to join in regardless of level, from enthusiastic beginners to seasoned bird nerds. If you see something interesting but aren’t sure what it is, you can ask your fellow observers, or just snap a photo – we can always identify it later.

We’ll be meeting next to the Vench Youth and Play space (on Romney Avenue, Lockleaze, opposite Hogath Walk What Three Words ///races.venue.split) for a 10am start. The Firstbus-operated no.72 stops just up the road, and the No 24 stops further down Romney Avenue. Be sure to bring suitable clothing and footwear, as well as something to keep hydrated.

These events are free to attend, but there’s also an option to donate. All donations go directly to the RSPB Bristol Local Group, helping us to put on future events. To learn more about Citizen Science Sundays, iNaturalist and the Postcode Wildlife Groups, you can click here and see our guide.
