The Portuguese House (12A) | Monday Night Film Club
Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre, Dumfries, DG2 7BE
Monday 16th November 2026
The Portuguese House
Original title: Una quinta portuguesa
Avelina Prat | Spain, Portugal | 2025 | 114m | 12A (contains moderate sex references) | In Spanish and Portuguese with English subtitles
A vanished wife. A borrowed name. A house in the Portuguese countryside. Grieving and aimless, quiet geography teacher Fernando slips into another man's identity as a gardener — and finds, in the friendship that follows, a life that isn't his own. A tender and hopeful story about connection and purpose.
“Gently but determinedly pulls the rug from beneath you at every turn… one of the most delicately observed relationships in recent cinema… a small, enigmatic marvel of a film, and a worthy swansong for Solo, an actor possessed of the most soulful gaze in Spanish cinema” - 8/10 UNCUT
It’s like a book group … but with films… It’s a Film + Discussion + Coffee evening and everyone is welcome to attend. No membership required. An audience or staff member will give a short introduction, and afterwards you are warmly invited to stay on for an informal post-film discussion over a cuppa. However, there is no obligation to join the discussion.
