Blazing Saddles (12A) Power, Corruption and Lies on Screen
Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre, Dumfries, DG2 7BE
Wednesday 30th December 2026
Blazing Saddles
Mel Brooks | USA | 1974 | 89m | 12A
To ruin a western town, a corrupt political boss appoints a black sheriff, who promptly becomes his most formidable adversary.
An odd choice for the Power, Corruption and Lies season but Mel Brooks’ audacious satire provides a fitting end to the season. Dismantling authority, genre conventions and social hierarchies through anarchic comedy, Blazing Saddles exposes the absurdity at the heart of power. After a season of secrets and corruption, laughter becomes its own form of resistance.
“Well, under the provisions of this bill, we would snatch two hundred thousand acres of Indian land, which we have deemed unsuitable for their use at this time. They're such children.”
Contains mouthed strong language, moderate sex references and racist terms.
