Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators - Webinar III: Russian Ab Initio Spotlight

Online
Wednesday 25th November 2026
All language teachers in the UK are invited to join this free interactive webinar exploring our Russian Ab Initio teaching resources, whether or not you have already engaged with the Prize. You will not be expected to have any knowledge of Russian to join this webinar, as our Ab Initio resources are designed to be taught by anyone. Using Russian Ab Initio translation activities can be an exciting way to engage students or give them an extra challenge.

This is the third in our series of webinars about the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators in 2026 and 2027. The Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators is a national translation competition run by the Queen's Translation Exchange at the University of Oxford. Through the year, registered teachers receive creative teaching resources across six languages, including Russian. These teaching packs are designed to help teachers bring creative translation into the MFL classroom as well as to help students prepare for the competition, which will run over several weeks from Monday 25 January to Friday 19 March 2027. The Prize is open to all UK students aged 11-18. Teachers can register at any time at this link.

During this interactive webinar, we will explore how teachers can use our Ab Initio Russian language teaching resources in the classroom to engage young language learners and prepare students for the Anthea Bell Prize translation competition by working together on a creative translation task. By the end of the webinar, we aim to help you feel confident in leading creative translation workshops from Russian into English. In the webinar, will talk you through some of our Ab Initio resources and how they can be used in lessons, with a practice translation exercise. We will also discuss ways to include home and heritage students, and there will be time for questions at the end.

Our Ab Initio teaching resources are designed for students with no previous experience of learning Russian. These resources can be delivered by teachers with or without knowledge of Russian, or run as an extension or homework activity to stretch keen linguists and/or students thinking about picking up a new language at university. Additionally, students at your school who are native speakers of Russian could help lead these activities. We have resources on Prigov's poetrygrams, a poem by Kuzmin, a novel set in Armenia by Narine Abgaryan and a non-fiction resource on Soviet adverts.

We will share details of how to join this online event with registered participants ahead of the webinar. Any questions, please contact: [email protected]
