Rethinking climate strategy – time for a greater focus on energy?

Online
Thursday 3rd December 2026
Despite Net Zero being the primary global strategy for more than 10 years it has failed to prevent greenhouse gas concentrations from continuing to increase. On the current trajectory global warming will reach 2°C by 2040 which means more intensive and frequent heatwaves, floods, droughts and forest fires. How can we develop a different strategy that is more fitted to the scale and urgency of climate change? What role can Universities play in stimulating imaginative and creative new approaches that have a substantive impact?
The event will start with Dr. Andy Brookes presenting a short paper A new strategy to tackle climate change: Global Clean Energy 2040.  Prof John Barry will respond to the presentation and then the session will be opened up for Q&A and discussion.
