Econoclast: Herman Daly, the economist who challenged economic growth
Peter Froggatt Centre Room 02/026, University Square, BT7 1NN
Wednesday 25th November 2026
A new documentary film about the life of iconoclastic economist Herman Daly, founded of ecological economics and critic of main/malestream neoclassical economics. Perhaps the most sacred tenet in the field of economics is that growth is good. Indeed, the value of limitless economic growth has almost become a religion. Yet, what if continued economic growth is a false gospel? What if it is impossible in a limited world? And what if it isn’t even delivering the increases in life satisfaction it promises? Little by little, economists are now challenging the Gospel of Growth. One of the first to do so, and perhaps the most influential, was Herman Daly. Often ignored, if not reviled, he made the case for a steady state economy and new measures of progress with such clarity and unassailable logic that many others have taken note. Join us as we consider a different roadmap to the future and see how Daly’s vision has begun to change the way we think about the economy.
