Cloud Nine by Caryl Churchill
The Michael Pilch Studio Theatre, Oxford, OX1 3TS
Thursday 12th November 2026 7:30PM
Caryl Churchill’s Cloud Nine is a two-act classic about sexual and colonial power. Act One is set in Victorian colonial Africa, where Clive’s strict patriarchal household hides tangled affairs and repression; roles are deliberately cross-cast, with Betty played by a man and the son Edward by a woman. Act Two jumps to 1979 London, but the characters have aged only 25 years. Freed from old constraints, they explore new relationships and identities, though echoes of the past persist.
Content Warning: Intersectional discrimination including sexism, racism, colonialism, homophobia; depictions of gun violence; sexual abuse of a child.
After their acclaimed production of Pinter's The Birthday Party, Postbox Productions return to present Caryl Churchill's most loved play.
