The Phoenix Choir of Crawley invites you to our Hiawatha's Wedding Feast Choral Workshop

Crawley Baptist Church, Crawley, RH11 7HJ
Saturday 6th June 2026
Singers are invited to join us for a fun and enjoyable day of singing and socialising, working on vocal technique and  getting to know Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's most famous work, Hiawatha's Wedding Feast.
Celebrating the union of Hiawatha and Minnehaha, this cantata is filled with imagery of nature and Native American culture. The music captures the joyous atmosphere of the wedding with vibrant choral sections and lyrical melodies.  The success of the premiere in 1898 was immediate and international, leading to the commission of a sequel, The Death of Minnehaha, and eventually a third part, Hiawatha's Departure.
The workshop will be led by Phoenix Choir Musical Director George Salmon, and guest vocal coach and mezzo-soprano Jane Haughton .
As well as being a wonderful choral and orchestral conductor, George is also a fine baritone, singing regularly with the Sonare Choir Quartet, and appearing in operas in the UK and abroad.
Jane joined the Royal Opera House chorus in 1999 with whom she sang full time for six years. She continues to run opera workshops for the ROH and more locally with Glyndebourne Education Department.  Jane loves teaching singing across all ages. She teaches at Ardingly College, and runs several community choirs based in Cuckfield.
There is parking at the venue, and level access to all the rooms we will be using.
Registration is from 9.30am, with the workshop running from 10am until approximately 4pm.  In the morning there will be a vocal technique session led by Jane, and sectional rehearsals led by Jane and George.  Refreshments will be provided for morning and afternoon breaks, and drinks at lunch break - please provide your own lunch.
The workshop will end with a sing through of all that we have worked on, which friends and family are welcome to attend.
More detailed information, including the full timetable for the day, will be sent by the end of May to everyone who has booked a place.
