The South Wales Male Choir or Côr Meibion De Cymru
Cirencester Parish Church St John Baptist., Cirencester, GL7 2NX
Friday 20th November 2026 7:30PM
The renowned Côr Meibion De Cymru, The South Wales Male Choir, is Wales' only truly regional male choir and is performing at the beautiful medieval Parish Church of St John Baptist in the centre of Cirencester. At the concert they will be joined by a combined Military Wives Choir with members from the UK Defence Academy (who recently came first in the Swindon Music Festival Choirs competition), and from Brize Norton.
The Choir was formed in 1982 to undertake a tour of the Eastern United States. The success of the tour had been so great that back home at the ‘winding-up’ meeting, 153 choristers unanimously voted to make the Choir permanent, the ‘raison d’etre’ being to continue to take abroad the traditions of the Welsh Male Choir. The Choir’s patron back then was Charles, Prince of Wales, and when he succeeded to the throne, the Choir was greatly honoured that he chose to continue in his role as Royal Patron.
To date, 28 tours have taken place – USA (4), Canada (3), France, Gibraltar, Eastern Europe, Australia, Austria and Madeira, together with no fewer than seven Commemorative Tours to the WWI and WWII Battlefields of Flanders and Normandy performing often before Royalty, Government Leaders and most importantly Veterans. The choir has even travelled to Monaco for a one-off concert in the International Sporting Club, and cruised the Baltic with shore based concerts in Russia, Estonia, and Norway. Regular concerts in the UK have been included since the late ‘80s with St David’s Day celebration concerts nearly always being performed outside Wales.
The South Wales Male Choir’s ethos can be summed up by its original piano accompanist Bryan Davies, who said, “Music is a serious business, but it’s got to be fun”. Three loud ‘Amens’ to that!
