Neville Centre First Spring Seminar 2026 - Life-Cycle Assessment

Online
Friday 24th April 2026 12:00PM
So Spring 2026 is now upon us and time for our first spring seminars of 2026, focusing on the theme of "Life-Cycle Assessment”; and the Neville Centre Of Excellence in Cement and Concrete Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering, University of Leeds, invites all interested parties to join.

Taking place online, on Friday, 24th April at 12:00, we welcome all parties to join us whether academics, students, industrial or civic organisations as well as any interested individuals.

Guest Speakers:
Dr Madeline CS Rihner is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield. She is a member of the BuildZero, a project aiming to transform the UK’s buildings towards zero material extraction, zero carbon, and zero waste, and is researching optimal end-use applications for end-of-life cement and concrete within the UK building and construction sector. She completed her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Auburn University (Alabama, USA) in 2020 and obtained her Master’s in Structural Engineering from the University of Leeds in 2021. During her masters, she completed her dissertation on the use of UK legacy blast furnace slags for low-carbon cement production. In 2026, she completed her PhD at the University of Sheffield, which expanded on her master’s dissertation by evaluating decarbonisation strategies for the UK cement and concrete sector within the context of energy-intensive industries. Her doctoral research applied life cycle assessment and material flow analysis to assess potential pathways for the sector to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Ahmed Sameer Yonus, University of Leeds. Ahmed is a PhD researcher in Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds. His research focuses on the impact of structural design decisions on reducing the embodied carbon of reinforced concrete buildings. He is particularly interested in developing traceable design decisions that support the decision-making process for low-carbon structural design. Alongside his research, Ahmed has experience in teaching, demonstrating, and providing academic support within the School of Civil Engineering.
