Ashes and Diamonds is Andrzej Wajda’s most celebrated reflection on the tragic birth of post-war Poland. Set on a single day — 8 May 1945, the official end of World War II in Europe — the film captures a nation that has just been liberated from one occupation only to face another. At its center stands Maciek Chełmicki, the iconic young Home Army fighter played by Zbigniew Cybulski. He is neither a pure hero nor a simple assassin. Tired of killing, momentarily seduced by the possibility of ordinary happiness with the barmaid Krystyna, he is nevertheless bound by loyalty to a cause that history has already begun to abandon. His final act — the murder of the communist official Szczuka — is carried out almost mechanically, while fireworks celebrating peace explode in the sky. The juxtaposition is one of the most famous images in Polish cinema: private tragedy unfolding against official rejoicing.
