History Club: Exploring the History of The Sussex Club with Deborah Price
MLAB, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Brighton, BN1 1EE
Sunday 29th November 2026 2:00PM
Do you remember The Sussex Club? Down a mysterious basement in Regency Square where you had to ring a bell and wait to be admitted?
This humble bar with an area for performers and the obligatory pool table was pivotal in the lives of many lesbians in Brighton and Hove and further afield.
At this month’s History Club, meet some of the people who went to the Sussex Club, the owner, the regulars, and the casual punter, and hear their stories.Expect accounts of how they fell in love, played pool and ate pancakes, the women who performed on stage, the wild nights out, the cozy lock-ins and the connections made!
The nights were presided over by the wonderful owner Shirley, who will be present as a special guest, and recall the tale of how it all came to be.
There will also be a live performance by Al Start who will perform the songs just like her 1993 gig at The Sussex Club! See images from that iconic gig on our archive, click here. (https://www.queerheritagesouth.co.uk/s/queer-heritage-south/item/3370)
History Club is a sober space, tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided.
History club is open to all (18+) and is free, but please book a ticket as capacity is limited and the club is very popular.
