Hampshire and the USA: 1492 – to the War of 1812!
St Peter’s Church Pastoral Centre, Winchester, SO23 8RY
Friday 20th November 2026
From the disastrous voyage of Humphrey Gilbert to the War of 1812 Hampshire played a unique role in the development of the United States. The checkered history involved Elizabethan explorers, Native American envoys, spies, the worst regiment in Canada, witches, mass marriages, lost bodies, cannibalism, tobacco, and fish. From August 1583 when North America was claimed for England, to September 1783 when most of it was lost, to the almost forgotten war of 1812.This lecture will transport you to the New World and back.
