Opening the first ever Kingdown Fringe, 'Wishing Life Away' is a bold and deeply personal one-person play, written and performed by Year 13 student, Freddie Evans. Following an unnamed narrator from ages 11 to 17, the piece traces the awkward, funny, and quietly devastating moments that shape growing up in the 21st century. From schooldays to shifting friendships, from small embarrassments to big questions, it captures the strange urgency of wanting to grow up… and the cost of wishing time away. Balancing sharp humour with moments of real emotional weight — and yes, the occasional slice of birthday cake — this is an honest, heartfelt look at teenage life as it’s actually lived.
