A retelling of the events of August 22, 2023, in a remote village in northern Pakistan, where schoolchildren regularly cross a mountainous canyon by cable car to reach class. When two of the car's three supporting cables suddenly snap, eight passengers, including six schoolboys, are left dangling roughly hundreds of metres above a ravine. Word spreads fast through the village, drawing family, friends, and neighbours to the site as a desperate rescue effort unfolds against the clock. Combining dramatic reenactments, real drone footage, and interviews with those involved, the film captures a community's collective fight to save its own.

Starring Mohammed Ali Naqvi, Bilal Sami

REVIEWS
"The ticking-clock tension will leave you breathless." ★★★★ Philip De Semlyen, Time Out

"May have all the urgency of a Hollywood disaster movie from the 1970s, but also incorporates an undercurrent of commentary on the neglect of poor rural communities in Pakistan." Allan Hunter, Screen Daily

"Emphasizes the self-reliance of the people of Battagram, who are accustomed to solving problems on their own." Bradley Gibson, Film Threat

"Hanging By a Wire is a nail-biting watch, one that never allows itself to become bogged down in excessive setup or backstory." Brian Farvour, The Playlist

ACCESSIBILITY
Subtitles

This film will be presented with Descriptive Subtitles. In addition to reproducing dialogue, these subtitles include additional non-dialogue sounds available to a hearing audience, e.g. "(sighs)" or "(door creaks)" and song lyrics. In our experience, guests do not find the subtitles distracting, especially as the majority of our films are subtitled foreign language films.

Hull Independent Cinema is working towards making our films more accessible. We have decided to present all our films with Descriptive Subtitles where available.

AGE RATING
HANGING BY A WIRE is rated 15. Under 15s will not be admitted. For more information, please see the film’s page on the BBFC website.
