Dir Paweł Pawlikowski | Poland, Germany, Italy, France | 2026 | 82 mins | Rated 12A | German, French, English,
Russian
In the summer of 1949, as the Cold War escalates, Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann returns to Germany after sixteen years in American exile, embarking on a road trip with his actress, writer, and rally driver daughter Erika in a black Buick. Together they cross a country in ruins, from US-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar, confronting a fatherland the divisions in which mirror the deep fractures within their own family. This quiet, precise drama is the final part of Pawlikowski’s historical trilogy, following Ida and Cold War.
Starring Sandra Hüller, Hanns Zischler, August Diehl
AWARDS AND FESTIVALS
Cannes Film Festival: Winner, Best Director; Nominee, Palme d'Or
Polish Film Festival: Nominee, Best Film
Sydney Film Festival: Nominee, Best Film
San Sebastián International Film Festival: Nominee, Audience Award
REVIEWS
"Here is an impossibly elegant, poised historical vignette whose brevity and control can hardly contain its characters’ personal and historical pain." ★★★★★ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
"It’s a moving film, too, and builds swiftly and assuredly to an emotionally devastating climax." ★★★★★ Kevin Maher, The Times
"This is another expansive, enriching work from a modern master." ★★★★★ Philip De Semlyen, Time Out
"It is immaculately performed by Zischler and especially Hüller, grounding the film throughout with an uncanny, expressive stillness." Leslie Felperin, The Hollywood Reporter
ACCESSIBILITY
Subtitles
This film will be presented with Descriptive Subtitles. In addition to reproducing dialogue, these subtitles include additional non-dialogue sounds available to a hearing audience, e.g. "(sighs)" or "(door creaks)" and song lyrics. In our experience, guests do not find the subtitles distracting, especially as the majority of our films are subtitled foreign language films.
Hull Independent Cinema is working towards making our films more accessible. We have decided to present all our films with Descriptive Subtitles where available.
AGE RATING
FATHERLAND is rated 12A. Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, please see the film’s page on the BBFC website.
Programme Details
The venue is open all day, so why not come along early to grab a drink and a snack? The programme run time includes an allowance for introductions and up to three trailers. While we will endeavour to accommodate latecomers, this may not always be possible. Please note that we reserve the right to refuse entry, without a refund, to anyone arriving after the advertised start time.
