They’re back. Bournemouth University continue their exploration of the Iron Age and Roman landscape in Dorset. Students and academics alike are poring over artefacts and newly dug holes in the Dorset countryside.

The project, designed around the training of archaeology students at the university, started in 2009 and is exploring the Iron Age to Roman transition through detailed field survey, geophysical investigation and targeted excavation of hilltop sites in east Dorset.

Last year’s visit excavations continued to explore the cemetery close to the banjo enclosure unearthed in 2023 which is calling into question our view of Iron Age practices and attitudes. Also, new DNA and dating analysis is now key to interpretation of the structure of society at this fascinating site.

This exclusive tour is, as usual, free to Field Club members, but we would be most grateful if you could contribute at the dig itself. Proceeds go to the people who most deserve it – the student diggers.
