Excavation Visit - Fordingbridge
PCA Excavation at Fordingbridge, Fordingbridge, SP6 1NQ
Tuesday 14th April 2026
Our good friends at Pre-Construct Archaeology have invited us to view excavations they are undertaking in Fordingbridge. Apologies for the short notice, but this development-led site is proving to be quite exciting.
PCA currently have Iron Age/ Early Roman and Bronze Age finds and evidence, and the real star of the show which is a lot of Neolithic! They have at least 30 Neolithic pits which is unusual for the New Forest area and they almost all contain nice bits of worked flint including blades and even a couple of polished axes along with a small amount of pottery. Because of this they have a different excavation strategy to normal, recording the exact height and location of each piece of flint, full excavation of each pit in 10cm spits and using wooden tools giving better potential for microwear analysis in post-ex. Jury is still out as to whether there are any Neolithic buildings but they might know by our visit.
