Gordon Pocket & Friends: Album Launch

Mandala Café & Eatery, Sheffield, S8 0RN
Friday 13th November 2026
It’s the launch of the album no-one requested, but is here anyway. State of the Nation is Gordon Pocket’s 2nd foray into long-player-land.

State of the Nation scrapes and then demolishes the barrel of current affairs for comedy nuggets as nefarious as Donald Trump, the privatisation of British sewage infrastructure, Richard and Judy, pervy BBC newsreaders, Rotherham racists and cricket. It is the musical Empire Strikes Back of a potential trilogy of nonsense.

The evening will also feature guest spots from proper musicians that can actually play and sing. You might even want to join in with them.

About the artist.

Mildly amusing, mildly offensive, Gordon Pocket is a folkish songsmith from Sheffield. He is not often compared to other Yorkshire troubadours Jake Thackray, John Shuttleworth and Captain Hotknives, and even less often, favourably.

He released his debut solo album, Happy Anniversary, in 2024. It is twelve songs of folk, comedy, innuendo, the Shipping Forecast, Scunthorpe, sex addicts, Monty Don and Jägermeister. Available on all evil multinational streaming platforms.

It received rave reviews including, from Alexis Petridis in the Guardian: “Your message wasn't delivered because the address couldn't be found, or is unable to receive mail”.

And Sheffield culture zine, Now Then: “Thanks for your email. We try to read every email we get but we're not able to respond to everything.”

So inspired, he locked himself in a room for two years and created his masterpiece, State of the Nation.
