Sparkle & Shine: Diwali '26
Maisemore Village Hall, Gloucester, GL2 8JE
Sunday 15th November 2026
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals in India. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. Traditionally, it marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana.
Celebrated with great enthusiasm, Diwali involves lighting oil lamps (diyas), decorating homes with rangoli, exchanging sweets and gifts, bursting fireworks, and worshipping deities like Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) and Ganesha (god of wisdom and prosperity). It is a time of joy, togetherness, and new beginnings.
Bijoya Sammelan is the Bengali term for festive gatherings held after Durga Puja. The events celebrate the spirit of Bijoya Dashami, which marks the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura and the triumph of good over evil. These celebrations take place across West Bengal, bringing communities and families together.
