Derek vs Derek

Two farmers. Two neighbouring farms. One very big disagreement.
What do you do when your neighbour goes completely wild?

Award-winning director James Dawson’s new documentary is set in the rolling hills of Devon, telling the story of two neighbouring farmers who share the same name but take radically different approaches to land use.

In equal parts hilarious and moving, the film shines a light on the vital debate surrounding the future of rural Britain, encouraging conversation around how farming and nature restoration might work together.

An intensive dairy farmer called Derek has worked his land the traditional way for years. Then his neighbour, who is also called Derek, decides to hand his own land back to nature. As tempers fray, wild animals escape and the landscape changes around them, the two Dereks end up in a turbulent, funny and surprisingly tender relationship.

James Dawson’s documentary (88 mins) has been selected for the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival 2026. It’s a human story about farming, wildlife and the people who share a boundary fence, and it’s likely to get you talking about how we use land and what we want from the countryside around us.
