Laundry Night with Chris Redmond: Write to the Beat
Online
Wednesday 16th September 2026
One-off online poetry workshop | Wednesday 16 September | 8pm | £10
What happens to your writing when another creative language enters the room?
Join poet, musician and Tongue Fu founder Chris Redmond for 75 minutes of words, music and creative experimentation - designed to jolt you out of your usual patterns and take your writing somewhere unexpected.
Headphones on. Inner critic off.
We’ll write our way into different pieces of music and explore what they do to mood, rhythm, pace and style. How do you write a poem like a melody or a drumbeat? What happens when you let the music lead?
Expect to leave energised and surprised with a bunch of new drafts and ideas to come back to.
Chris has spent 30+ years exploring the relationship between words and music. As founder of Tongue Fu and Co-Artistic Director of Hot Poets, he’s worked across five continents with artists including Kae Tempest, Lemn Sissay, Irvine Welsh and Hollie McNish.
We’ll email the Zoom link on the day. Bring something to write with and a pair of headphones.
*******
In preparation for the workshop, please select some music that you are going to write with.
1. Energy - this one can be a song or instrumental. Make it one that has an energy that you love
2. Instrumental - something without words - that contrasts in mood from your first choice. Any style.
When choosing, try not to select songs or pieces that have specific related memories. We want something that is not too clearly defined in your own mythology. By that I mean, don't choose your wedding dance music, or your favourite breakup song, or the one heard at a funeral. Familiarity is good, attachment, not so.
When you book a workshop with us, we'll add you to our mailing list so you hear about occasional new events. Please let us know if you'd like to opt out.
