Woodland Pottery Workshop
The Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, Derby, DE1 3AF
Sunday 7th February 2027
Learn hand-building pottery techniques and make three woodland inspired ceramic pieces!
About this course:
During this 4 hour workshop, you’ll use a range of hand building and decorating techniques to create three woodland inspired ceramic pieces: a tree stump ring dish, a mini silver birch vase and a tree bark textured plant pot.
You’ll learn how to form clay by hand, build and join pieces securely, create organic shapes, and use texture to recreate details inspired by trees.
Your tree stump ring dish and mini birch vase will be glazed by Lorna after they've been fired, while you’ll have the opportunity to decorate your own bark textured plant pot during the session, making each piece completely individual.
The workshop combines guided demonstrations with plenty of time to work at your own pace, making it suitable for complete beginners as well as anyone who has tried pottery before and would like to develop their hand building skills.
By the end of the workshop, each participant will have made:
● One tree stump ring dish
● One mini silver birch vase
● One tree bark textured plant pot
Maker Lorna will glaze the tree stump ring dish and mini birch vase, while the plant pot will retain the decoration added by participants during the workshop. Finished work will be available for collection in approximately 6 weeks.
About the Maker:
Lorna Ellen creates handmade, one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces inspired by the textures, colours and natural forms of Britain’s trees. Each piece is made in Nottinghamshire with the intention of celebrating the beauty of nature and bringing a little of the forest indoors.
Through her ceramics Lorna brings together two of her biggest passions - ceramics and the environment. She continually explores how to make her practice more sustainable, from reusing packaging to experimenting with lower impact materials. All with the goal of creating work that’s not only inspired by nature, but also kinder to it.
