Rural Reels - Midwinter Break

Set across modern-day Glasgow and Amsterdam, Midwinter Break — based on Bernard MacLaverty’s acclaimed 2017 novel — follows long-married couple Stella and Gerry as they travel to Amsterdam for a holiday that forces them to confront the fractures in their relationship. Directed by Polly Findlay and starring Lesley Manville and Ciarán Hinds, the film explores themes of faith, trauma, and enduring love, as buried tensions from their past gradually resurface during the trip. The film has been praised for its intimate performances and emotionally restrained portrait of a marriage at a crossroads.
