Grand Parade, Room M2-Board Room, Brighton, BN2 0JY
Thursday 12th November 2026 6:00PM
Please join Professor Annebella Pollen for a talk, discussion and drinks to celebrate the launch of her new book: Whippersnappers: How Children Became Photographers
Funded by a Philip Leverhulme Prize, accompanied by a 2026-27 exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery, and newly published by Four Corners Books, Whippersnappers tells the history of photography taken by children from the 1880s to the coming of digital cameras. Annebella will share how she located her sources, developed the storylines, and shaped them into the final outcomes.
Following an opening talk, Annebella will be in discussion on the book’s themes and methods with Dr Sara Dominici, Reader in Photographic History and Visual Culture at University of Westminster, with time for audience Q&A (this part takes place from 6-7pm). The event will close with time for an informal drink, to view the book and, if wanted, to buy a signed copy.
The talk is kindly hosted by the Museums, Archives and Exhibitions strand of the Centre for Design History, led by Dr Sue Breakell, Anne Nielsen and Rachel Maloney, with refreshments generously supplied by Four Corners Books. The event is open to all, but booking is required:
