Catch The Sparrow - The Cumberland Arms, Newcastle

The Cumberland Arms, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE6 1LD
Saturday 7th November 2026 8:00PM
Catch The Sparrow will be sharing new work at The Cumberland Arms in a duo set up with talented folk singer and fiddle player Sam Baxter.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, Catch The Sparrow (singer-songwriter Suze Terwisscha van Scheltinga) initially studied to be a jazz vocalist before her love for folk music brought her to the North East of England. She quickly became a fixture on the Newcastle folk scene, performing extensively throughout the region before relocating to London in 2024.

A natural storyteller with a keen ear for captivating melodies, her songs effortlessly cross boundaries of style and genre to create a sound that is uniquely her own. As she taps into folk ballads and fairytales, she introduces a colourful cast of scorned wives, sheltered princesses, free-spirited poets, and crossdressing adventurers, shedding a new light on timeless tales. Her upcoming single ‘When the lost god speaks’ was commissioned by the National Trust and will be available on all streaming platforms on 16 October 2026.

“…elaborate, fairy-like ballads on a bed of piano sounds … with the violin seeking its own mercurial way throughout.” – New Folk Sounds

Support from 'haar'

Jessie Howard is a North East based singer-songwriter/musician releasing music under the alias 'haar'. She also plays/writes with the duo 'watersmeet.'

'Resolutely DIY, Jessie's songs reflect on snatched moments of big thoughts, equal parts wonder and gratitude, something solid and still ungraspable. Her circular melodies fall between dream pop’s atmospherics and minimalist indie pop’s no-messing production.' - Foxy Digitalis
