Winter Wassail Workshop with Natasha Hood
Emmanuel church hall, Suffolk, NR35 1DG
Sunday 17th January 2027 12:00PM
Join Natasha as we learn songs mainly from the orchard-visiting tradition, all in glorious harmony. Songs taught by ear and repetition; no previous experience needed.
Come A-Wassailing! Traditionally wassailing songs were sung in the period between Christmas Eve and Old Twelfth Night (17th January), with different versions coming from all over the country. This description of the tradition of wassailing comes from the folk singer Eliza Carthy's website: Before there was carolling, there was wassailing, where seasonal songs were exchanged for money, food and ale. In the countryside trees were blessed, while in the towns wassailers went house to house with their songs and calls for Christmas treats. Coming from the Anglo Saxon waes hael, 'wassail' is a toast wishing good health with a 'be well'.
So, let's sing and be merry, wishing each other well for the New Year! We'll share harmony songs from both the town and rural wassailing traditions, and enjoy the warmth of good company and cheer, followed by wassailing Bungay's apple trees.
Natasha is an experienced choral leader and community voice singer. She has led community singing workshops at BFF2024 and BFF2026.
